Quill

Cut down the length of the cone so the face comes out as a long teardrop, rounded at the top and tapering to a blunt tip. A pale cream shaft runs down the middle with a rust line through it, and from it the scale ends spread out to both sides in fine barbs, cream over dark brown, the way a feather splits. Three small white seed ends sit along the left of the shaft, and near the top there is a patch of dull turquoise. Below the barbs the face goes over to straight rust and honey grain running to the tip.

The resin sits smooth and glassy over the face and rounds off at the rim, so the edge is sealed flush with no scale tips breaking the outline. It throws a long white highlight down one side. The other face is the outside of the cone, tan scales in overlapping rows with dark brown lines between them under the same gloss. It hangs from a coiled copper loop on a pale braided cord, and the two faces read very differently as it turns.
