Anemone

Cut down the length of the cone so the face comes out as a wedge, wide and scalloped across the top and narrowing to a blunt squared-off end. A small round core sits near the top, cream around an ochre middle, and from it thin cream tendrils fall in every direction over rust and dark brown, thickest down the centre where they gather into a deep red-brown band. Lower down the scales read as stacked blocks of tan and honey with dark lines between them, and the outline breaks into rounded lobes where the scale ends stop.

The resin is thick and glassy over the face, pooling a little at the rim so the lobes are sealed flush, and it throws a violet flash near the top edge in the light. A few small bubbles sit in the middle. The other face is the outside of the cone, rust and tan in stacked arcs with pale flecks along the ridges. It hangs from a coiled brass loop on a pale braided cord, and the core stays the first thing you see as it turns.
