Fountain

Cut down the length of the cone so the face comes out as a broad spade, wide across the top and tapering to a blunt rounded tip, with a scalloped edge where the scale ends break the outline. Near the top a pale cream core sits with an ochre middle, and the scales spray out from it in fine cream and rust rays, dark brown lines running between every row. Below that the rays close into a deep red-brown centre with a few small dark seed ends caught in it, and the grain runs straight down to the bottom edge.

The resin sits thick and glassy over the cut face and rounds off at the rim, so the scalloped tips are sealed flush and the outer scales along the left show through as tan and honey. A few small bubbles are caught in the lower half, and a violet flash comes up along one edge in the light. It hangs from a coiled brass loop on a pale braided cord, and the pale core stays the first thing you see as it turns.
